Bayeux Ho Hum

The Best Beloved and me are a bit ho hum about the hoo-hah about the arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum.

Thousands of tickets gone in the first 24 hours of going on sale, ah well yawn.

This is not because we don’t think it is  splendid, entertaining, historical, amazingly stitched, a significant bit of visual history and much more, but because we have seen it all before, and I mean all of it.

We decided one February, pretty much on the spur of the moment when we were living in France, to take a tour around Normandy and see some of the first world war graveyards and sites and eat some pork and apples and drink some cider, and what not.

We did that and more, and one rainy, windswept morning we pitched up near Bayeux.

We sat in a cafe relatively early one morning, and wondered what to do.

‘When is the tourist office open?’ we asked.

‘Mmm about April.’ the waiter said.

So we decided to go to Bayeux and see the famous tapestry.

The museum was open.

We had the whole place and tapestry to ourselves.

For about three hours…….
